Our Learning

Writing

Intent

At Primet Primary, our intention is to deliver a creative and inspiring English curriculum that fosters a lifelong love of literature and writing. We aim to nurture children’s enjoyment of reading and provide rich, engaging opportunities for writing that encourage imagination, curiosity, and confidence.

Through active and collaborative learning, pupils are supported to develop their ideas orally before transferring them into written form. Our curriculum empowers children to use ambitious vocabulary, explore a range of genres, and express themselves with creativity and precision. We encourage pupils to think critically about their writing, to craft language that captivates the reader, and to adapt their style and tone with growing awareness.

Across the wider curriculum, children are given meaningful opportunities to apply, reinforce, and refine their English skills so that they can communicate confidently and creatively in all areas of learning.

Implementation

At Primet Primary, we follow the Talk for Writing approach, which places oracy at the heart of English teaching. Lessons are designed to strengthen children’s speaking and listening skills, as these form the foundation of effective writing.

Through paired talk, group work, and whole-class discussions, pupils learn to articulate their ideas clearly and confidently. Teachers model writing and demonstrate key strategies such as Kung Fu Punctuation, speaking stems, and the Talk for Writing process to support language development and structure.

Each half-term’s curriculum overview outlines the focus texts and genres being explored.

Afternoon English - Basic Skills.

At Primet Primary School, we are committed to ensuring that every child develops fluency and accuracy in the core skills of English. Each week, pupils revisit and build upon a punctuation or grammar focus, helping them to apply these essential skills purposefully in their writing.

Children spend around ten minutes each afternoon practising a specific skill, consolidating previous learning and strengthening their foundations in English.

The Basic Skills Writing Progression document outlines how these skills develop from EYFS through to Year 6, ensuring a consistent and progressive approach across the school.
