Year 1

Welcome to Year 1 from Mrs Dale and Miss Shaughnessy.
We have a wide range of enriched learning experiences planned throughout the year, delivered through both teacher-led lessons and continuous provision. As we continue to build on the skills developed in Reception, children have regular opportunities for play-based, child-led learning. These activities are carefully linked to our class topics and encourage children to explore their own ideas, develop independence, and foster a lifelong love of learning.
The topics we teach in year 1 are:
- This is me
- Festivals and Celebrations
- Kings, Queens and Castles
- Step into the Wild
- Hot, Hot, Hot
Below is our weekly timetable, which highlights the subjects and activities your child will be learning each week. It provides an overview of what a typical week looks like in Year 1.
Class Timetable

PE
Year 1, PE taught every Monday and Tuesday, so remember to have your kit in school ensure all clothing and footwear is labelled.
Homework
Children are expected to do homework everyday. This includes: reading, spellings and maths.
Reading
Read your reading book every night (2 or 3 pages is enough). Books are changed every Friday. There is also a page for your child to draw a picture/story map to show what they have read about. Please ensure they bring their book bag with their book and reading record to school every day.
Spellings
A new spelling list is given every Monday which link in with taught phonics. Practice these everyday, ready for a spelling test on Friday.
