Our Learning

Reception

Welcome to Reception!

The Reception year is an exciting time, where children are encouraged to become enthusiastic and independent learners. We understand that parents/carers are a children's first and most important educator, and we are passionate about developing an effective parent partnership. During this year, we all work together to ensure that your child develops a love for learning and secures strong foundations for their learning journey.

Curriculum

Reception follows the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum, which is split into seven areas of learning.

  • Communication and Language
  • Physical Development
  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development
  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding the World
  • Expressive Arts and Design

We teach each of these areas through a balance of focused activities with an adult and through self-learning in continuous provision and carefully consider characteristics of effective learning which promotes positive attitudes to learning, enthusiasm for knowledge and the confidence to become successful learners.

Phonics

Phonics are an essential part of children's learning, helping them read and write to reach the ultimate goal of becoming a fluent reader. Children will participate in daily phonics sessions throughout their learning journey in reception and key stage 1 and will be supported where needed to help them progress. At Primet we follow the phonic scheme 'Little Wandle'.

Preparing for School

When children start school in September, it is important they know how to do these things by themselves:

  • put on their own coat
  • put on their own shoes
  • go to the toilet and wash their hands
  • take turns and tidy up
  • listen to a story (preferably read by an adult rather than iPad)
  • use a knife and fork

Don't worry about learning to read, write and arithmetic - that's what school is for. :)

For information more about preparing your child for starting school, you can follow this link to the Lancashire County Council website or download the leaflet at the bottom of the page.

How you can help at home:

  • Read with your child every night.
  • Practise high-frequency words.
  • Practise writing name.
  • Talk about the numbers, colours, words and letters you see when you are out and about.
  • Encourage your child to be independent, for example, getting dressed by themselves.

You can keep up to date with your child’s learning and development on dojo or by talking to their key adult.

Enrichment

Throughout the year we will go on several local area trips including posting letters and a pantomime. In the summer term, we will go on a trip to the farm.
