Intent statement
At Primet Primary, our intent is to provide an Art curriculum that nurtures creativity, self-expression and emotional intelligence. We want every child to see themselves as an artist: confident in exploring ideas, experimenting with materials, and communicating through visual forms. Art at Primet enables pupils to think critically, take creative risks, and develop resilience through the process of refining and improving their work.
Our curriculum is designed to inspire curiosity about the wider world by exposing children to a diverse range of artists, craftspeople and designers. Pupils learn how art reflects culture, identity and history, helping them appreciate the richness of human creativity. By building year-on-year progression in drawing, painting, sculpture, collage and digital art, we ensure all children develop strong foundational skills and a growing sense of pride in their achievements.
Art also plays an important role in supporting wellbeing at Primet. Through opportunities to express feelings, preferences and perspectives, and a deeper understanding of themselves and others. We intend for every child to leave our school with the confidence to create, the ability to evaluate thoughtfully, and a lifelong appreciation of the arts.
Implementation
Art is taught through a clear, progressive curriculum from EYFS to Year 6, with each year group building upon previously taught knowledge and skills. Units are carefully planned to introduce children to influential artists and artistic movements (e.g., Monet, Picasso, Rousseau, O’Keeffe, Keith Haring), which then inspire practical outcomes such as drawing, painting, printmaking, collage, textiles, 3D sculpture, digital art and mixed media.
Lessons follow a structured sequence that includes:

Exploration and idea generation through sketchbooks, discussion and artist study

Skill modelling and explicit teaching of techniques, tools and materials

Independent creative practice, where children apply and refine taught skills

Reflection and evaluation, encouraging pupils to review their own work and give constructive feedback to others
Throughout the curriculum, pupils revisit key skills such as line, colour, texture, pattern, composition and form to ensure strong progression. Practical experiences include clay, printing, digital media, textiles, observational drawing, relief work and large-scale collaborative pieces.
Art is enriched across the wider curriculum through thematic links with history, geography, science and school-wide celebrations. Opportunities for emotional expression and teamwork are embedded in projects requiring shared decision-making, problem-solving and creative collaboration.
