Music
Intent statement
The music curriculum at Primet Primary School enables children to listen to, appreciate, and respond to a wide range of music from diverse cultures. Pupils develop confidence to perform individually and in groups, using both tuned and untuned instruments, and are encouraged to express their creativity through their own compositions.
Through a carefully planned progression of skills, our curriculum ensures that all children experience high-quality music education. In Key Stage 2, pupils learn to play the recorder, and all children have opportunities to explore the glockenspiel and a variety of untuned percussion instruments.
We use the Sing Up curriculum, aligned with the National Curriculum and the DfE’s Model Music Curriculum, to ensure consistent skill development across all key stages. This approach supports pupils’ musical growth, fosters creativity, and encourages a lifelong appreciation of music.
Implementation
Music is taught for one hour per week in each class, with lessons designed to develop listening, performing, composing, and appraising skills. The Sing Up programme provides structured guidance for singing and musicianship, while instrument teaching in KS2 ensures practical experience and ensemble skills.
Pupils are encouraged to take part in performances and collaborative music-making, promoting confidence, teamwork, and creativity. Teachers provide differentiated support to ensure all pupils can engage meaningfully with music, and progression is monitored to ensure each child develops their skills and understanding.
