Modern Foreign Languages

Intent statement

Learning a foreign language opens doors to understanding different cultures, countries, and customs. High quality teaching fosters curiosity and deepens children’s knowledge of the world.

At Primet Primary, our aim is to provide a rich and engaging French curriculum that inspires a love of language learning. Through active and interactive lessons, pupils develop vocabulary, confidence in speaking, and essential reading and writing skills. This foundation supports future language learning and helps pupils become global citizens.

Implementation

French is taught in Years 3–6 following the National Curriculum (2014) using the Twinkl French Scheme of Work to ensure consistency and progression. Lessons focus on developing speaking and listening skills through regular practice and interactive activities, supported by accurate use of vocabulary and grammatical structures. Pupils also build confidence in reading and writing, while exploring cultural aspects of French life to enhance understanding and enjoyment. French is taught for the equivalent of one 30-minute lesson per week, delivered either weekly or in blocks across the term.
