Spelling
Intent Statement
At Primet Primary, our intention is to develop confident, accurate spellers who understand the patterns, rules, and structures of the English language. We aim to foster a positive attitude towards spelling by building secure phonological, morphological, and etymological knowledge, enabling children to apply spelling skills independently across the curriculum. Through a carefully sequenced approach from Early Years to Year 6, pupils develop the confidence to spell accurately, use ambitious vocabulary, and communicate effectively in their writing.
Implementation
At Primet Primary, spelling is taught through Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised in EYFS and KS1 and EdShed (Spelling Shed) in KS2, ensuring clear progression in spelling knowledge and skills. Children are explicitly taught spelling patterns, rules, and strategies through engaging lessons that promote discussion, oral rehearsal, syllable awareness, and word investigation. In KS2, spelling is taught twice weekly, with pupils practising and applying their learning through Spelling Shed both in school and at home.
Spelling is reinforced across the curriculum through reading, writing, and vocabulary-rich learning experiences. Teachers model accurate spelling, provide opportunities for practise and retrieval, and encourage pupils to apply their spelling knowledge independently within their written work. Each year group's curriculum is carefully planned to ensure full coverage of the National Curriculum spelling requirements while building long-term retention and confidence.
