Summer 1 - Romans (Boudicca)
Summer 1: What We’re Learning This Half Term
This half-term, Year 3 will be diving into a rich and exciting curriculum packed with hands-on learning, historical adventures, and creative exploration.
In Maths, children will deepen their understanding of volume and capacity before moving on to position and direction, developing practical skills they can apply in real world contexts.
In English, our focus text is a gripping Roman fiction story about Boudicca, inspiring reading, writing, and drama linked to this powerful historical figure.
Our Spelling lessons will explore patterns such as words ending in -ary, the short /u/ sound spelt with ou, and word families that help build vocabulary and confidence.
In Science, children will become plant experts investigating seeds and seedlings, roots and shoots, leaves and light, and flowers and fruit. They will also learn about pollination and seed formation, leading up to their own plant project before completing an end of unit assessment.
Our History topic takes us back to Roman Britain. Pupils will explore who the Romans were, why they invaded, how they built roads and towns, and of course, why Boudicca led her famous rebellion. They will also investigate Hadrian’s Wall, life in a Roman villa, and consider why we still remember the Romans today.
In RE, children will learn about leadership through the stories and teachings of the Sikh Gurus, including Guru Nanak and the importance of the Guru Granth Sahib.
French lessons will build vocabulary around the classroom, school subjects, PE, and hobbies, ending with a fun quiz.
In ICT, pupils will develop their digital publishing skills learning about online safety, working with words and pictures, editing, and designing layouts.
For PE, the focus is on creative games, including TAG and target activities.
