This term in Year 3, we have been busy learning across a wide range of exciting subjects!

In Maths, children will build confidence with number by rounding to the nearest 100, adding and subtracting 1s and 10s (including crossing the boundary), and developing mental strategies using compensation. We will also explore doubles up to 100, helping pupils become quicker and more accurate with mental arithmetic.

In Writing, pupils will dive into the world of science fiction, creating imaginative stories in a similar style to shared texts. They will practise developing character descriptions and writing letters, focusing on clear structure, description and audience. Alongside this, our Spelling work will include short /i/ spelt y, prefixes mis- and dis-, suffixes beginning with a vowel, and words with the /k/ sound spelt ch.

In Science, children will explore rocks and soil. They will identify and classify different types of rock, investigate their properties through practical experiments, explore porous rocks, and learn about soil and sedimentation.

Our History topic focuses on Cotton: Past and Present. Pupils will learn why cotton was important to Lancashire, how the cotton industry developed over time, what life was like working in the mills, and how the industry faced crisis as part of a global story. They will also discover where cotton originally came from.

In PE, children will develop teamwork and game skills through sending and receiving a ball in a range of activities. They will practise moving into space, playing simple and invasion games, using basic tactics, playing three-touch ball, and learning how to evaluate their own and others’ success.

In PSHRE, we will establish ground rules and explore different types of families, recognising that families provide love, care and support. Children will learn what to do if family situations make them feel unhappy or unsafe, how to report uncomfortable content to a trusted adult, and reflect on times they have been supportive within friendships.
