Skills Progression
Our History curriculum is designed to build knowledge and skills progressively from EYFS to Year 6. Children begin by using everyday language related to time and talking about past and present events in their own lives. As they move through school, they develop chronological understanding using timelines and historical terms, progressing to analysing connections and trends across periods. Communication skills evolve from simple retelling to producing structured accounts using subject-specific vocabulary. Enquiry skills grow from asking basic questions and using simple sources to evaluating evidence, addressing historically valid questions, and forming reasoned interpretations. By Year 6, pupils confidently research using a wide range of sources, test hypotheses, and present well-structured explanations that demonstrate critical thinking and historical perspective.
