Skills Progression
Our Art curriculum is built on a clear and coherent progression of skills to Year 6. Children begin by experimenting with a wide range of materials, exploring simple techniques in drawing, painting, collage, printmaking and sculpture.
As they move through school, they develop increasing control, accuracy and independence, refining their use of line, colour, texture, form and composition. Pupils learn to record ideas in sketchbooks, study artists in greater depth and apply more advanced processes such as tonal shading, perspective, mixed media, digital art and complex 3D work.
By Upper Key Stage 2, children confidently plan, develop and evaluate their work using subject-specific vocabulary, drawing on a secure foundation of skills that prepares them for creative study in secondary school.
