Reading
Intent
At Primet Primary, our aim is to promote high standards of literacy by nurturing a lifelong love of reading and literature. We create a rich reading environment where imagination is sparked and creativity can flourish.
Through a range of effective reading strategies, we aim to instil a sense of wonder and enjoyment, enabling pupils to explore real-life themes, engage in meaningful discussions, and develop a lasting passion for learning.
All pupils are encouraged to read widely across fiction and non-fiction, deepening their understanding of the world around them. By the end of their primary education, it is our intention that every child can read fluently and confidently, equipping them to access and enjoy learning across all subjects.
Implementation
Reading is at the heart of our curriculum at Primet Primary and is woven through every subject.
In EYFS and Key Stage 1, early reading is taught through the Little Wandle phonics programme, with a strong emphasis on word reading, prosody, and comprehension. As children move into Key Stage 2, a whole-class reading approach is used, focusing on developing a range of comprehension skills.
A variety of reading strategies are employed to strengthen fluency and understanding, including adult modelling, choral reading, echo reading, and paired reading. Alongside fiction and non-fiction, poetry forms an integral part of our reading curriculum and is explored, understood, and enjoyed each half-term.
At Primet, fostering a genuine love of reading is central to what we do. Children are encouraged to choose and enjoy books daily from a wide range of genres within our school and class libraries. They also have regular opportunities to read for pleasure and to listen to stories read aloud at the end of each school day, helping to nurture a lifelong enjoyment of books and storytelling.
