The tale of the Pendle Witches and how a nine-year-old girl would condemn her family to death - LancsLive

This half-term we shall be completing our topic 'Ole Pendle, Ole Pendle' - The history and story of the Pendle Witch Trials

Writing

The topic for English this half term will be around the story 'The Witches'  by Roald Dahl. We will be writing around several different text types, using 'The Witches' as an example and as a writing stimulus.

History - A local history study

As well as reading about fictional witches, we will be learning about the very real trial of the Pendle Witches and Pendle Witch Trial, studying an aspect of history or a site dating from a period beyond 1066 that is significant in the locality. This will cover the factual events for the people involved we will also be looking at the wider attitudes prevalent within society at large during the 17th century.

Science  - States of Matter

Children will compare and group materials together, according to whether they are solids, liquids or gases . They will observe that some materials change state when they are heated or cooled, and measure or research the temperature at which this happens in degrees Celsius (°C)

Later they will identify the part played by evaporation and condensation in the water cycle and associate the rate of evaporation with temperature.

During Art, we will be painting in the style of locally-based artist, Keith Melling. We will be learning many and varies painting techniques to help us capture the mood and feeling Keith demonstrates in his own paintings.
